Autumn Pet Care: How to Keep Your Pet Safe, Happy and Cosy

As the days get shorter and the evenings become cooler, autumn is slowly making its way to our doorsteps. For us, autumn can mean cosy evenings, warm drinks and getting ready for the months ahead. But for our pets, the change in season can also  bring new sights, sounds and routines. With a little preparation, there are plenty of simple ways to help your dog or cat stay happy, comfortable and safe throughout the autumn months. At Mariesa’s Pet Boutique, pets are at the heart of everything we do, so here are some of my favourite autumn pet care tips to help you and your four-legged friend enjoy the season together.

Create a warm and cosy space
As temperatures start to drop, your pet may appreciate having a warm and comfortable place to relax.
Create a cosy corner with their favourite bed, blanket and toys. Having a familiar space they can retreat to can help them feel comfortable, particularly as the evenings become darker and the weather gets colder.
For Lexi, her favourite cosy spot is definitely one of the best places in the house. There’s nothing she enjoys more than settling down somewhere comfortable with her favourite toy nearby.
Sometimes the simplest things make our pets happiest.
Keep your pet entertained indoors
Autumn weather isn't always perfect for outdoor adventures. Rainy days and colder evenings can mean spending more time indoors, so having a selection of toys and activities available can help keep your pet entertained.
Interactive toys, enrichment activities and their favourite playthings can provide mental stimulation as well as fun.
And, of course, indoor play is also a wonderful way to spend some extra quality time together.
Prepare your pet for fireworks
For many pets, one of the most difficult parts of autumn is fireworks season.
If your dog or cat is nervous around loud noises, it can help to start preparing before Bonfire Night rather than waiting until the evening itself.
Create a quiet, familiar area where your pet can feel safe. Their bed, favourite blanket and a familiar toy can help make this space feel comforting.
When fireworks are expected, keeping curtains closed can help reduce flashes, while familiar background sounds such as the television or radio may help mask some of the noise.
Try to remain calm and allow your pet to choose where they feel most comfortable. Never force them to interact if they would rather hide or have some quiet time.
If your pet is particularly anxious about fireworks, speak to your vet for further advice before the season begins.
Keep walks safe as the evenings get darker
The shorter days mean that many dog walks will take place in lower light.
Take extra care when walking near roads and consider using reflective or high-visibility accessories so your dog is easier for others to see.
Autumn walks can be beautiful, but wet leaves, muddy paths and changing weather can also make walks more challenging. Taking a little extra care can help keep your adventures enjoyable and safe.
After muddy or wet walks, don't forget to check your dog's paws and give them a gentle clean if needed.
Be aware of autumn hazards
Autumn brings lots of beautiful changes outdoors, but there are also some seasonal hazards that pet owners should be aware of.
Keep potentially harmful substances such as antifreeze safely out of reach, and be mindful of what your pet may pick up while exploring outdoors.
It's also worth remembering that not everything found on the ground during an autumn walk is safe for pets to eat.
If you are ever concerned that your pet has eaten something potentially harmful, contact your vet for advice as soon as possible.
Keep their routine familiar
Our pets often feel happiest when life is predictable.
As the seasons change, try to keep meal times, walks and bedtime routines as consistent as possible.
For dogs, getting walks finished earlier in the day when fireworks are expected can also help reduce exposure to loud noises later in the evening.
Small changes can make a big difference to helping your pet feel secure.
Enjoy the little moments
One of the best things about autumn is having more opportunities to enjoy those quiet moments together.
A favourite toy, a gentle cuddle, a cosy evening on the sofa or a peaceful walk can mean so much to our pets.
They don't need anything complicated. Often, it's simply having us there that matters most.
Autumn with Lexi
Autumn always makes me want to slow down and appreciate those little moments with Lexi.
She has been such a huge inspiration behind Mariesa’s Pet Boutique and is at the heart of so many of the things I create. When I choose products, toys and accessories for my shop, I always think about the things that would make Lexi happy, comfortable and spoiled.
That's what I want my shop to be about — celebrating the pets who are such an important part of our families.
Whether you're looking for a personalised gift, a new toy or something cosy for your pet, I hope you'll find something that makes this season a little more special.
And as the evenings get darker and the weather gets cooler, I hope you and your pets enjoy plenty of cosy days, happy walks and special moments together.
Love,
Mariesa & Lexi
